Handmade pottery plates

Making plates is a challenge, I actually think its harder to make a plate than it is a teapot. A controversial opinion I know! But stay with me here, plates use up a huge amount of clay somewhere between 1.8 and 2 kilos. Centering clay at this size is difficult, its all pure technique between you, the wheel and the clay.

Knitting and stitching show

It'd been such a long time since I'd been to Harrogate, was nice to drink some real ale and eat pub grub. The exhibition center was quite impressive, really a maze of yarns, fabrics and machines!

Crafting thoughts

More recently though I've been thinking less about the how's and more about the why's. No one ever really asks me about the 'why' and an awful lot of crafters will say that they re-evaluated their lives after a major event.

Norfolk coast

Some of the highlights of the trip were these colourful beach huts at Wells-by-the-Sea and the pier at Cromer. I don't think Cromer is well known as a tourist destination despite its lovely beach, there were plenty of folks out catching crabs as well.

Apple and Elderflower marmalade jam recipe

I made this up with apples since we had some in the fruit bowl starting to turn but I'd imagine this would be equally lovely with rhubarb too. I've named this a marmalade rather than a jam because it has a slightly bitter aftertaste rather than being purely sweet.

In the studio with Mike Oakes

Its great to have such lovely photos of the two of us working, perhaps more importantly to have a snapshot of ourselves as an heirloom for the future. I also never realised quite how much I look like my Dad, especially when I'm throwing!

These images will appear in the Autumn edition of UK Handmade as part of their feature and interviews on generational crafting.
