Beary Tales - Whats it all about

My name is Lynn Smith and although I currently have to work full-time, all my passion and spare time is poured into my little bear business.  Up until July 2011 I had never attempted to create anything with a needle and thread... I knew that I just couldn't sew. Although I love all things textile (and almost went to the Scottish textile college) I just thought that only terribly clever people could sew. I have always been what some may call 'arty farty' and I am good at drawing and painting…

New Blog... new to UKhandmade... new to being a designer!

Hi, I've quite ridiculously got butterflies (or flutter-by's as my 3 year old daughter calls them) typing this as not only have I only just set up my blog Grace's Favours (as in, there's only 2 posts on there!) I've also not got involved in the UK Handmade forums before and in fact, if I'm being completely honest, I've only been designing and making things since August 2011!

So I suppose what I'm trying to…

Upcycled fairytale dress for 6-year-old

Hi everyone,

If you're a mother of a young daughter then I'm sure you'll know just how much they love to dress up.

Instead of buying another princess/fairy dress I decided to make one using the top of one of my daughter's old dresses, and fabric from her bedroom valance * which hadn't been used in about a year *.

What made this dress quite different is that I made an overlay - or apron - to wear over the dress. It was made out of pale pink silk…

My Faithful Pfaff (and the benefits of it's IDT system)

I have had my Pfaff machine for nearly 15 years. It was a top-of-the-range model when I bought it and I have used it at least four times a week ever since. It is a Pfaff 7570, and came complete with an embroidery unit and a couple of cards of embroidery designs.

I love my machine, it has worked so hard making soft furnishings for myself and my clients, my clothes, my… Continue

Out of Africa

In the 1980s I studied textile design and, in particular, African textiles such as indigo dyeing, kente weaving, Asafo flags and adinkra printed cloth. These fantastically vibrant cloths were the basis of much of my design work. I was also supplementing my grant by making kimono jackets which I then sold to fellow students and much of the material came from Brixton Market.

I have been piecing an African fabric quilt for a long… Continue

Fabric Friday - Clothkits

There has been a little reminiscing in our house over the past couple of days as our eldest son turned twelve yesterday and our daughters had found some old photo albums tucked away on a shelf. Lots of cute toddlers and toothless grins! All of this got me to thinking of my own childhood and have a strong memory of this fab short dungaree set made from navy nylon with a large red apple on the bib! Being born in the mid seventies nylon and cheesecloth were standard features in my… Continue
