Upcycled fabric heart brooch tutorial

I have blogged a tutorial for a simple, but pretty, handmade heart brooch over on my blog.

They make a great gift for valentines. Or you could make one for yourself to brighten up a jacket or cardigan. Alternatively you could make a batch of them to use as favors at an eco-themed wedding. When I have some spare time, I make a selection of these brooches and pop them in my customer’s parcels as an extra free gift. They are simple to make and you can use any colour combination of fabric…

Upcycled fairytale dress for 6-year-old

Hi everyone,

If you're a mother of a young daughter then I'm sure you'll know just how much they love to dress up.

Instead of buying another princess/fairy dress I decided to make one using the top of one of my daughter's old dresses, and fabric from her bedroom valance * which hadn't been used in about a year *.

What made this dress quite different is that I made an overlay - or apron - to wear over the dress. It was made out of pale pink silk…

Out of Africa

In the 1980s I studied textile design and, in particular, African textiles such as indigo dyeing, kente weaving, Asafo flags and adinkra printed cloth. These fantastically vibrant cloths were the basis of much of my design work. I was also supplementing my grant by making kimono jackets which I then sold to fellow students and much of the material came from Brixton Market.

I have been piecing an African fabric quilt for a long… Continue

Recycled fabric apron

So I was looking thru my stash of clothing (in the to be recycled pile) and found a pair of jeans that looked very nice with against the new fat quarter of amy butler fabric that landed on my mat that I STILL had not used. This is the bit I love the most... the ideas that come with allowing my mind to wander. What will this become?

Then I remebered the reverse applique technique that was featured in the Alabama stitch club book that I wanted to try out. A bit of mix and match and I… Continue

Fabric Friday - Clothkits

There has been a little reminiscing in our house over the past couple of days as our eldest son turned twelve yesterday and our daughters had found some old photo albums tucked away on a shelf. Lots of cute toddlers and toothless grins! All of this got me to thinking of my own childhood and have a strong memory of this fab short dungaree set made from navy nylon with a large red apple on the bib! Being born in the mid seventies nylon and cheesecloth were standard features in my… Continue

Fabric Friday - Textiles in Jewellery

After a week of looking at sparkly colourful gems and their designers I am in a quandry as to how I can finish with a jewellery inspired Fabric Friday. Off the top of my head I can't think of a designer who prints pictures of jewels on textiles, but please correct me if there is anybody! My likely choices for such designs would be hinting towards Michael Miller or Alexander Henry, but I have planned to feature them soon. So I think the best solution will be to look at textiles in jewellery… Continue
