For me I have always worked my pricing from recommended retail price backwards, which I realise can be difficult if you don't have anything to compare your product to or are prone to underselling yourself.
I start with a product and decide that it'…
when pricing, you also need to take care of your overheads.
You need to add all expenses, say for a year (rent, tools, insurance, show fees, etc...) and divide them by the number of hours you will be working
for example
studio rent £200/month = 2400…
Hi Louise,
The next issue of UKHandmade will have something in it you will find very interesting and hopefully useful re your question.
Do not undersell yourself! After all .. you are a designer. You just graduated from college as a designer too so…
It looks good. Clean and simple. I would advise 2 small tweaks. On the front page have some photographs to wet peoples appetite for what's to come and make sure there is an element of text of your front page that is regularly changed. Websites that…
Hi Louise,
When I price my work to sell to galleries I add the cost of materials to my labour cost per hour and add on a small percentage for profit.
For example if something took me an hour to make and the materials were £5.

After my final show, someone rang me wanting to buy some of my work, to put into a new shop opening in London soon! :) However, I really don't know how much to sell them for.
I don't know a lot about the shop, but I think it's unique and slightly ex…
Hi Louise
Congratulations on getting your site up and running. I just had a look, I like the front page. It is very attractive, it made me want to have a look further inside. It all looks "clean" ( I like the white background), uncluttered, easy to…
Hi Louise!
Being nosy is fine! I kind of fell into it really. Studied Fine Art at Uni - retrained as a graphic designer when I realised I wanted a career where I could make at least some money! Then nine years ago joined a UK based importer who wanted a point of difference by designing their product rather than buying "off the shelf" designs.
The pay was rubbish and they didn't know what to do with me at first but luckily I'm a bit pushy so I nine years later I'm the Head Designer of a team of 6 designers. We sell lots of different products from Wall Art, mirrors, Mens and Ladies Leather gifts, jewellery boxes, clocks, silver plated items - anything gifty really!
It's difficult for me sometimes as so often my designs are changed to make them cheaper - taking away the elements which made them nice in the first place. The buyers priority is always their profit margins - the product and what the customer wants is always a very late afterthought!
Guess that's why I am so passionate about handcrafted items - seen too much behind the scenes of the mass market industry - including the Far East factories!!
