I love making new things with preloved materials and objects. One of my fav's is using men's shirts for cushion covers. I also use vintage and other second-hand fabrics. I make collage keyring tags with small scraps of vintage and old fabrics and used stamps. I've been making bottlecap brooches for 6 years now. They've become a bit of a signature piece and people come back at different events to buy new ones. I also love old buttons and have made a few new lines with them. Old and vintage scarves become halter tops and I created a new line using preloved materials called ©Neckies, which are mini scarves on chokers. It's a bit of a long list, as I could go on, but won't!

Hi Everyone,

I've had a request to help circulate the below message to let you all know about an upcoming event and a great offer avavilable to you from Moo.com ....

Hi this is Dave (and Paula) from KCCO

Our group, KEEP CALM and CRAFT ON, is running a fair on may 5th in seaham. It's an etsy sellers fair, and we're having a feature that is the main fundraiser, a table of business cards from etsy sellers. The deal is, any UK seller can send between 10 and 100 cards for a donation of £2 min. For that they join the table, the media photograph and take what they want for later use, features etc. Then as the public circulate, they are encouraged to take cards for later shopping. It's proving very popular so we contacted moo.com to see if they wanted to sponsor the table, and they came up with an amazing deal. A free pack of 50 Etsy branded cards to replace those donated, plus another 50 for any UK Handmade member, as they weren't aware of us before and are keen to recruit crafters and artists.

So we're inviting any etsy sellers to donate. details are sent on request, just ask on here or keepcalmevents@gmail.com

You can have, and use, the UKHandmade code now.

http://moo.com/link/h89f

The offer doesn't include p&p so you have 50 cards, different image on each if you want, for £3.90

If you donate, we'll send the Etsy code.

Thanks for reading this.

Dave

thank you so much for all that great info my email address is info@fraoch.me - I think my soil needed to be richer - courgettes running rampant that would be a sight to see!!!!

Courgettes like humus rich soil, fruit/flower type of feeding (potassium or potash), and plenty of water - I used watering spike bottles or a sunken plantpot to improve watering directly to the roots. To be honest, mine used to grow rampantly, and I had to cut the growing end back before they took over my tiny veg plot. The courgettes are most tasty if harvested small (not more than 6-7" long), and harvesting encourages more veg. You can also use seaweed feeds for many fruiting and flowering plants. Natural soil improvers are Comfrey (high in potash for fruit/flowers) & nettles (improves nitrogen for leafy plants); both of which you can cut up and mix into your compost heap, or steep them to make a natural liquid feed. If you send me your email address, I can give you more hints and tips and some photos for ideas... I'm not sure that the Eco Conscious Crafters would appreciate being full of my gardening ramblings ;)

I am jealous that you have cabbage and beetroot as all my attempts this year were a disaster especially the courgettes which only grew to about less than 1/2"!!!!  normally I just get the flower and then nothing!! Any ideas smouldering wicks?  I would love to have a productive patch but so far not working! on a positive note all the herbs were great esp. the lemon verbena which is my favourite and the flowers its just the veg part that is not working..

Helen, the answer is soup! When you get a glut of crop, whatever you can't use or blanche & freeze (in portion sizes) as it comes out of the ground; then instead you cook it, blitz it, and freeze it, to use as soup or sauce base.

Thanks - luckily the gardening is my hubby's hobby, all have to do is cook the produce to make tasty meals! If anyone has any ideas with what i can do with loads of cabbage and beetroot (not necessarily together!) i'd be happy to hear them!

Hi Helen, I grew my own veg/salad for about 7 yrs until the candling took over all of my 'non-proper-job' time. If you want any tips, just ask me. One really useful thing is to use 2ltr bottles with 'watering spikes' to keep everything fed & watered with optimum feed/water.  ;)
